Stalin declared that Germany’s blitzkrieg (lightning war) would fail because of its underestimation of the power of the Red Army and the unstoppable nature of an Anglo-American-Soviet alliance. While Germany had advanced to within 25 km of the Kremlin, Stalin launched a counter-offensive that pushed Germany back by 80 km, marking the first major defeat of the German army (Wehrmacht) in the war so far.

By the end of 1943, Russia had taken back half of its initial German-occupied territory. Stalin’s policy of moving Russian factories to the far East had allowed him to increase industrial output without it being vulnerable to German air attacks. Although Germany held around half of European Russia and 40% of its population, the Soviets had been preparing for war for over ten years, providing 14 million citizens with at least some military training.
